THE GOVERNMENT OF THE

FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

AT THE THIRD SUMMIT

The 3rd summit of the Co-Prosperity Alliance Zone was held on 21st July, 2009 in the Kara, Togo.

Present at the summit were His Excellency Dr. Boni YAYI, President of the Republic of Benin. His Excellency Alhaji Umaru Musa YAR’ADUA, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. His Excellency Mr. Faure Essozimna GNASSINBGE. President of the Republic of Togo and His Excellency Mr. John Dramani MAHAMA, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.’

The Alliance is established for the following purposes:

The four States freely choose to integrate their national economies on the basis of common platform that seeks to promote interests in dealing with shared visions and concerns arising from the imperatives of global competitiveness and inter-dependence;

The four states share sufficient mutual aspirations as to commit themselves at the political leadership and followership levels to the endeavour, and

The four states propose, in due course, to admit other like-minded neighbours desirous of participating in the Alliance.


The agreement establishes the Technical Support Facility (TSF) in Nigeria under the Co-Prosperity Alliance Zone (COPAZ), based on the 2007 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). It aims to enhance cooperation, implement diplomatic privileges and immunities for TSF staff, and affirm TSF’s legal status in Nigeria.

The Heads of State and Government of Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo met in Abuja on 8 February 2007 to reinforce their longstanding friendship and economic cooperation.

They expressed concern over Africa’s ongoing marginalization and affirmed that the best way to counter it is through sustained collaboration and joint actions, guided by a coherent integration program among the three countries.
